athletes train backwards.

They spend most of their time fixing weaknesses instead of maximizing strengths.

Sounds right.
Usually it’s not.

Elite performance is asymmetrical.

Barry Sanders wasn’t great because he was balanced. He wasn’t.
He was great because he was impossible to touch.

Everyone knew what he was going to do, but not how.
Didn’t matter.
You can’t hit what you can’t catch.

Same with Jerome Bettis.

Everyone knew he was running downhill.
Through you.
Didn’t matter.

Our world operates under power laws. The highest performers understand this.
A tiny percentage of their traits produce the overwhelming majority of their results.

A lot of coaches claim to love “well-rounded.”

Useful.
Reliable.
Replaceable.

The dangerous athletes are uneven.

One has absurd vision.
Another has freakish speed.
Another scores from impossible angles.

Those traits ARE the thing.
Everything else is minutia.

That doesn’t mean weaknesses should be blindly ignored.
If a weakness keeps you off the field, fix it.

But spending years sanding down your edges often destroys the thing that made you dangerous in the first place.

Don’t mistaken high agency traits for laziness.

The kid who hates conditioning but can’t put the hockey stick down?
Maybe they’re lazy.
Or, maybe they have the best hands on the team?

That’s the part most systems miss.

Obsession is directional.
People naturally drift toward the parts of the sport they’re built for.
And usually, what athletes enjoy most is connected to what they’re best at.

The obsession creates the iteration-based reps.
Those reps create the outlier.

Good CEO’s understand this.

They hire marketers to market.
Builders to build.
Designers to design.
Salespeople to sell.

Nobody walks into a company and says:
“We need everyone equally competent at everything.”

That would be ridiculous.

The best athletes eventually force reality onto the system.
If they are dominant enough at one thing, the game bends around them.

Discover your natural proclivities.
Figure out where they are best utilized.
Become the best in the world at them.

The rest will take care of itself.

INNO ATHLETE

Helping athletes athletes think their problem is confidence. It’s usually thinking.

The modern sports world is obsessed with “mental performance.”

Visualization.
Self-talk.
Mindset optimization.

But the more an athlete thinks about performance, the worse they often perform. Because great athletes are rarely thinking when they compete. They’re responding.

A linebacker doesn’t consciously process a pulling guard.
A hitter doesn’t intellectually solve a 98 mph fastball.

The body reacts before language can.
That’s what training is for.

Thinking is used as a preamble to training.
Competition is where thinking disappears.

Most people reverse those two.

The brain itself is not the problem.

The brain is just the operating system for the body. It processes stimuli and coordinates movement.

The loaded mind is the problem. It interferes.
The brain reacts.
The mind analyzes.

Trying to fix the mind with the mind is a losing game.

Athletes spiral because they become obsessed with controlling their internal state.
But you cannot force yourself into flow.

The moment you try, friction appears.

It’s like trying to catch a leaf in the wind.
The second you reach for it, you disturb it.

The best performances usually happen when the athlete disappears.

“I wasn’t thinking.”
“It slowed down.”
“It felt automatic.”

That’s not mystical.
That’s the absence of interference.

The entire purpose of training is to build responses that happen without conscious Who took this awkward picture of me after a little interuption.

The sports world is changing faster than most people realize.

The path from youth sports to college athletics and professional competition looks nothing like it did even a decade ago. NIL, social media, athlete branding, private training, sponsorships, recruiting platforms, and emerging professional opportunities have fundamentally changed the game.

Most athletes and families are trying to navigate this new reality using an old playbook. That’s where Inno(vative) Athlete comes in.

My goal is simple: help athletes and families better understand the forces shaping modern sports so they can make smarter decisions about performance, recruiting, contracts, sponsorships, business opportunities, and long-term development.

After spending over 15 years working alongside some of the world’s top athletes across the NFL, NBA, PLL, NCAA, and beyond, I’ve learned that success (or simply enjoying your athletic experience) rarely comes from following the crowd. It comes from understanding where the world is headed and positioning yourself accordingly.

Whether you're a parent trying to make sense of a rapidly changing landscape, or an athlete pursuing the pinnacle of your sport, I hope the ideas shared here help you navigate the path ahead with greater clarity and confidence.

The future belongs to those willing to innovate, and enjoy doing so.

- Ryan

More outlets: Website | Tiktok | Instagram | Facebook | X | LinkedIn | YouTube | Spotify
